M.I.A 'Bad Girls' Single Review

By Joshua Tindall (Guest Blogger)

London born rapper M.I.A. has returned to the music scene after a brief hiatus and has brought with her the release of her new single ‘Bad Girls’.

The bass filled, near 4 minute song builds on M.I.A’s well known reputation of bringing new and seldom heard instruments to the table featuring Middle Eastern influences along with a strong drum beat throughout. Add to that an infectious, attitude filled chorus: ‘Live fast die young, bad girls do it well’ and you’ll understand why the track has been long awaited by her legion of fans. Fans who are no doubt going to be more than happy with her exciting new offering.

Why? Because M.I.A’s voice is atmospheric and distinctive of course, suiting the track perfectly. The beat and lyrics scream ‘empowerment’ with a sense that ‘Bad Girls’ will ultimately come out on top. A sure fire club hit. Ushering in big things in terms of shaking her ‘Indy’ image as she joins the likes of Jessie J and Nicki Minaj in forming a stronger presence in the mainstream music scene.

As for the track’s accompanying music video, the bold visual shows a confrontation with men, who in the end join M.I.A. on her travels around the Moroccan desert. Sporting a visual style just as daring as her music. Colorful tones contrasting with sandy planes and a refreshing 80s vibes. A style rarely executed well by any of her competitors even mixing in a little Middle Eastern high-end fashion to the forefront in striking patterned and metallic pieces.

Overall Verdict: ‘Bad Girls’ is a must listen with its unsuspecting rhythmic beat and snappy, confident lyrics. Once you’ve heard it, ‘Bad Girls’ will no doubt remain on your play-lists and in your head and on your drunken nights out for many a month ahead.

M.I.A’s new single ‘Bad Girls’ is available to download now getting its official release January 31 M.I.A also currently features on Madonna’s new single making ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ alongside Nicki Minaj out. M.I.A's upcoming untitled fourth album is expected to drop Summer 2012.
