My First Mink

I'm not a doctor and I don't know the technical terminology, but I do know that sunshine activates our happiness glands.
~Jessi Lane Adams
I know that sunshine activates my happiness glands! We had lots of it yesterday. Our temps were in the mid 50s and it was a great day to be OUT. I spent a lot of the day walking around one of my favorite places, Bisset Park in Radford, VA. That's where I saw my first MINK! At first I thought it was a river otter but when I researched it further I realized it was a Mink

Hellebores (30 JAN 2011)

In late autumn, when the excitement of the flowering season was over and I was taking stock, I saw this sprawling mess of leaves in the suntrap area of my garden and thought that I should get rid of this plant, and its partner growing in the shade, at the soonest opportunity. I had never watered them and didn't know their name. They were out of proportion with the rest of my garden, were taking

Jeremy Piven talks about Miley Cyrus

Jeremy Piven recently talked to E! Online about working with Miley Cyrus on their new movie So Undercover:"I think I must be an 18-year-old girl because we got along really well. It was just so much fun. I had so much fun with her and we had great chemistry. It was really really weird—we're like polar opposites. You know, you can judge her, but what were you doing when you were 18? She's kind

Wish Casting Wednesday: The Indulge Edition

Hello Puddings!*
This week Jamie tempts us with the question: What do you wish to enjoy? Oh dear! I wish to enjoy a book that gets me and changes my day, a slice of flourless chocolate cake the size of your head, a rainy day at the library pouring over pictures, the pecking of a type writer, a cat nap with my kittens, a perfect cup of coffee--two gloops milk, one lump sugar--a KICK ASS girl band that makes me want to be Better, a walk in the woods while it snows in the evening on a Tuesday, the fringed thrill of being a Burlesque Queen, an "Ah HA!" moment that feels as good as a good sneeze, a dirty fortune cookie and a grin that shouts: "Anywhere I go--Damn, There I AM!" I wish to enjoy the Art of Living while Living as ART. What do you wish to enjoy, darlings?

Ohio State Basketball Players sing Party in the USA

This has to be the worst version of Party in the USA out there. Ohio State is the #1 basketball team in the USA, but they are terrible singers.

Juice, Man: This Is Serious Business

Hello Chickadees!*
I've had a whirling flock of idea-birds roosting in my brain these days: thoughts about the lives of girls, thoughts about Art, thoughts about Music, thoughts about Feminism, thoughts about my friends: About body paint and Patti Smith and xerox zines. And when the feathers settle there is one thought, one passionate hot pink thought that rises to the surface:

It is of utmost importance for women
to have a rich creative inner life.

Why? Why does it matter? It matters because your creative juices are what your life is steeped in. Your creative juices determine how your life is digested. The Art of Who You Are is empowering. It is a place of focus-- a place where your confidence blooms-- a place where you try on masks and become a multidimensional being of the super nova!

Politically speaking, the beauty that you make is not a "consumable" like paper plates and night creams that other people eat up and throw away. It is your domain. It is a place of power where you say what you need to say without permission.

It is a place where you are always pretty enough and strong enough. It's important because your creative juice is something that no one can take from you, but sadly we often choose to sacrifice it believing we must abandon it to be a better mother, worker bee, or partner--to be an all-accomplishing-to-do-list-abolishing Wonder Woman. It's a trap--It's not True! To be the best Queen of the Castle, the great Glass Ceiling Smasher and Rock-Yer-Socks-Off-Orbit-Altering-Lover you need your JUICE. You can't be any of those things, much less anything to anyone if your inspired and imaginative self is the pallid ghost of a malnourished muse.

Women say to me all the time, "But, I'm not an artist/creative/clever/good as you..." Bullshittery! Art is not about paint. Or Journals. Or Haircuts. Art is about doing whatever you want WHEN you WANT. Get Up The Guts and Make Stuff!

My wish for all of my ladies in the blogosphere and the 3rd dimension make the moment to make art from the heART: in your studios, in your kitchens, in your boardrooms, in your tree houses and in your classrooms. Your health, sanity and the fate of the planet are at stake! *Pass this on to a cutie that needs a fortified creative smoothie!*

What are your thoughts?

Until Next Time,
Much Joy and Merry Making!
Molly

Watercolors on the Drawing Board

I have been mostly working on my book with Marty and Kristen --- and trying to become more familiar with my Mac.

It's taken it's toll on my studio time... and I haven't been able to get that much painting done.

Here's what I've done for part of last week.

The boa has been added to the MEDUSA painting... and I've started a small self portrait --- just to get my brush wet again.

So.. enjoy!

VORTEX COMING SOON

This is an image of Galaxial Landscape Oil on linen 90 x 180 cm. It will be in my forthcoming exhibition VORTEX: Seeking Stillness At Its Core which opens Wed 23 Feb 6-8pm. The exhibition dates are Tues 22 Feb - Sunday 6 March and it will be open daily 10 am -6 pm.

Regular readers, I am sorry I have not posted much lately, but the floods here in Brisbane have been disastrous. I am one of the lucky ones because my house did not get wet, but I did have to evacuate through nearly knee high water in my street. I had spent the previous 2 days preparing the house, by sandbagging doors, and taking everything that was downstairs to my second floor. I filled my car and my daughter's car with fuel and parked them up high, plus a whole lot of other preparations that you just do not think of until you have to.

I am still without internet at home, so I am using my daughter's laptop remotely. Bigpond does not know when internet will be restored as various pivotal junctions were totally covered by water for a few days and repairs are currently being done around the clock.

It is very distressing when I meet people who had houses that were totally inundated with water. Some, did not expect to be flooded and thus were not prepared. It is very sad too to think of the devastation in the Lockyer Valley where the wall of water caused loss of life and homes and everything else. I have relations who live in the Valley and they are physically ok, but they have lost massive production on their farms.

As regular readers now, I write and paint about water. In the aftermath of the flood I am thinking again about the implications of commodifying water. I have written about this before and I will write more about it when I have better internet access.

Cheers,
Kathryn

Art Bead Scene Challenge Necklace

I decided to enter the January Art Bead Scene challenge. A picture is posted and the designer is supposed to create a jewelry item inspired by the picture that includes a hand made bead/s or pendant.

I call this So Sunny Yellow, and it's not colors I would normally use, so it was a good challenge for me. And I really like it!

http://www.artbeadscence.blogspot.com/
It's about 24" long, I used vintage etched glass millefiori beads that I got at a bead show a long time ago.  Swarovski, czech glass, and small gold vermeil.  I made matching earrrings.  I wired 2 of the vintage bulls eye beads into the center of 2 of my CERelements sun shaped pieces.
