Men's 19th Century Fashion

The Victorian Era, aka the time in which Queen Victoria reigned supreme, was a time of great peace, prosperity and all-round self-confidence. And with Charles Dickens' 200th anniversary today we take a look at how the Victorian period has influenced some of the major fashion designer's collections to have graced the Catwalk in the last few years.

First up is Lanvin's Winter 2009 collection. Focusing on traditional styles with Victorian tailored cuts complete with tapestry embroidered finishes, Lanvin emphasised Gothic statements on the runway. Displaying double breasted suits at every opportunity, touching on the classic British Gent for further inspiration.

The late Alexander McQueen also premiered a Victorian inspired range back in 2009. Entitled 'The McQueensberry Rules', the collection was founded from the looks of films such as Gangs of New York and Interview with a Vampire.

Givenchy's 'Victorian Circus' debuted in 2011 with Ricardo Tisci crafting a postmodern Gothic setting from Victorian influences representing the sophisticated gent with a twisted dark side. Gimp Masks included of course. The collection launched in June with the Spring/Summer collection becoming available online.

More recently, Dolce & Gabbana formed their Fall 2012 collection from the looks, patterns and materials of the Victorian era. Prestigious top coats, capes and tuxedo jackets are the dominating factor. With velvet and woolen suits taking centre stage complete with gold tapestry designs on a minimal scale.

When it comes to accessorizing, Masonic jewelry is a must. Gentleman's clubs being a thing of tremendous authority during this period. The right pocket watch, cravat and symbolic rings a signature of both status and power. Add a more modern twist by simple patterned pocket squares or vintage jeweled bolo ties.
