Skirt Refashion

So, I was at the thrift store, on my way to the back of the store, where all the good stuff is :)
I usually never go through the clothes,
but this time something stood out and I just had to check it out.

It was red, it had polka dots and it was nautical.
What more can a girl ask for, right?:

Although the fabric was pretty, the skirt was ugly and falling apart:
(I believe my mom and aunts used to have a similar skirt in the early 90's)

This skirt was a 4 petite and did not fit me.
No worries, now that I have started sewing, I knew I had a lot of fabric to work with.
So I picked up the skirt for $3.00, Here is what I turned it in to:

What do you think? I made it into a elastic skirt
with a waist that kind of looks like a paper bag skirt.
To see how I made it and more pictures, read on:

First I cut off the waist:

I cut cut off the zipper portion:

Then, I used my seam ripper and ripped apart all of the pleats:

Then I ironed out the folds from the pleats,
I measured and found out that I had 2 1/2 yards of fabric!
Lots to work with:

For the measurements, I just measured my waist and times it by two.
example, my waist is 34 X 2: 68

So I cut two pieces 34 inches wide.

I put right sides together, and sewed the two together:

Then I had to create the casing. First I folded and ironed down a inch:

I was using 1 1/2 inch wide elastic, So I needed to create a casing to fit it, and still have a little paper bag skirt effect.

So I folded the fabric about 3 1/2 inches and ironed:

Then I marked a inch all around the skirt so I could sew and straight line:

I sewed straight over the marked part.
Then I needed to sew the bottom part to create the casing.
I sewed about a quarter of a inch, all the way around leaving a gap about 3 inches to insert the elastic:

Then I inserted the elastic:

I overlapped the elastic and sewed back and forth a few times.
Then I sewed the gap closed:

Then I finished the hem (not pictured)
I also created and sewed on three belt loops (not pictured)

That's It!

I love this skirt, I have always wanted to red polka dot skirt and now I have one.

Best of all, it only cost me $3.00!

I declare this refashion a success.

Thanks for visiting :)
