The Secret Circle: The New Charmed?

Its been five long years since the finale episode of the WB's hit tv show Charmed, aptly titled 'Forever Charmed', saw the Charmed Ones cast their last spell but luckily the now named CW Network may have just stumbled upon its replacement. The supernatural teen drama The Secret Circle.

We've swapped sisters for teens, San Fransisco for a fictional town named Chance Harbor in Washington, and three for six as Cassie, Diana, Adam, Nick, Melissa and Faye embark on a journey of self-discovery in their new found coven. All descendants from a long line of powerful witches, the Circle is only made complete upon the arrival of new girl Cassie (Britt Robertson) who moves back to her town of birth to live with her grandmother following her mother's death in a mysterious fire.

Sparks fly when Cassie is instantly attracted to Circle member Adam (Thomas Dekker) who just so happens to have a girlfriend, Circle founder/self appointed leader Diana (Shelley Hennig). Spot the love triangle. After a magically heated confrontation with the never one to play by the rules Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) and her sidekick Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy), Cassie is flung into a life of witchcraft, secrecy and mystery with a little bit of danger thrown in for good measure. Oh and then there is Nick (Louis Hunter) the resident brooding bad boy with the six pack and the I'm going to screw you against a wall pout. Every town has one apparently. Or so I'm told.

Underneath all the teenage drama is the sinister agenda of Diana's Father Charles (Gale Harold) and Faye's mother Dawn (Natasha Henstridge) the group's principal. Both were participants of the previous Circle who were stripped of their powers and are among the only three survivors with their Coven's demise currently shrouded in mystery. Well its not so much a mystery considering Charles is the one who kills Cassie's mother Amelia by producing a do-it-yourself fire with his bare hands at the start of the pilot. Hmmm I wonder who killed the Circle's other parents?

One thing is for sure the teens' Coven is set for a bumpy ride learning to cope with their own powers, their relationships with one another both hot and cold oh and the threat of dark forces at play. But what teens don't have to deal with all that these days?

Based on the book series by Vampire Diaries novelist Lisa Jane Smith, the show was developed by Canadian born actor/writer/director Andrew Miller. The Secret Circle has already been given the greenlight for a full 22 episode run. New episodes of The Secret Circle air Wednesday nights here in the UK at 8pm over on Sky Living.
