MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #12

Welcome to Minx Mix Tape --a digital dance party devoted to celebrating women making awesome musical contributions. Let's get to the tape!

We'll start off with a solid rock track from Girl in a Coma. The band is made up of three sisters from San Antonio Texas. They just released a record this fall on Joan Jett's label--check them out!

Next we have the stipped down and straightforward stylings of Candian indie outfit Magneta Lane. These ladies have a record due in early 2012. Can't wait!

I saved my VERY favorite for last! Listening to Iwrestledabearonce is like being covered in rainbow sprinkles and then smothered to death by fire ants. METAL.

What are you listening to? Got a song you want to add to the tape? Leave a link in the comments!

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #12

Welcome to Minx Mix Tape--an all-girl digital dance party celebrating women making kick ass tunes for the masses. This week's tape has three tunes that'll make you want to burn your city down. Let's do it!

First up, is the down and dirty rock bomb, Nico Vega. What I enjoy most about this singer is the texture of her voice: it's distinctly feminine but quickly veers down a raspy roller coaster punctuated with shouts an claps. This video is insane...not for the squeemish!

Next up is the horror punk outfit, Schoolyard Heroes. Admittedly, upon first listening I didn't care for this band. But after spending more time with the music, I began to appreciate the grating quality of the vocals for their energy. It's a great mash up of punk, metal and all things doom and gloom--Bring on the zombies!

And finally we have the high-powered- garage inspired trio, The Ettes. These guys have been busy: touring with the Black Keys, Kings of Leon and The Dead Weather. Lead singer, Lindsay "Coco" Hames' side project, Parting Gifts will be releasing a record this September. Check it out!

Thanks for joining the party! Got a favorite tune from the mix? Have a song you want to see on the tape? Leave a link in the comments. Happy Listening!

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #10

Hello My Pretty Little Ponies! Welcome to another edition of Minx Mix Tape: an all girl digital dance party! This week we've got a little bitta old, a little bitta new and a lotta bit of awesome. :) Let's get to the tape!

First up is a little art rock from Pretty Girls Make Graves! This was the first "girl band" I ever saw, and it changed my life! They performed at The Globe, a beautifully smokey stage in Milwaukee and it was THEN I decided I was going to start a band. Though the group has disbanded, each one of the members has new projects rolling, which I highly recommend you check out.

I can't even describe the influential punk rock tsunami that was Bikini Kill. These girls are credited with fronting the Riot Grrrl movement of the 90's which changed the face of rock music for women FOREVER. The band was vital--critical to music history. However, because of their resistance to major media coverage, most of their videos are hand-held live recordings which make the lyrics indiscernible. SO, here is a video of their anthemic track, Rebel Girl spliced in with cuts from Kill Bill. Swords, Fire, Bikini Kill, lets do this.

To wrap up, we have a noise pop track from the Brooklyn duo, Sleigh Bells. This record will karate chop you in half--it's cooler than you, it's crunchy, it's loud, and there's a tower of flaming guitars. Hit it!

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #9

Hey Sugarsnacks! Welcome to another installment of Minx Mix Tape: an all girl digital dance party devoted to ladies past and present who are making noteworthy music for the masses. Let's get to the tape!

We're going to kick off this week's tape with a trip down memory lane--I discovered this band as a freshman in high school. A new friend offered me a ride home in her van we pet named, "The Doom Wagon" and as she turned the key, Kittie blasted me into a new musical dimension. "Can girls sing like that? Is this legal??"

Now we'll bring it down a notch with one of my favorite artists, Neko Case. Something about her velvety voice, the cut of her lyrics and the saddest steal guitar in the world just gets me every time. I've had the pleasure of seeing her twice and her live performances are just as haunting and brilliant as her records.

And to wrap up this week's dance party we'll time warp to be in the holy presence of the Godmother of Punk Rock, Patti Smith. This is one of my All Time Favorite Performances: The Old Grey Whistle test circa 1976. Here Patti tears it up with her epic Lyrical tirade, Horses.

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #8

Hello Chicakdees! Welcome to another installment of Minx Mix Tape--an all girl digital dance party dedicated to women making face melting music! Let's get to the tape!

The kick things off we've got Sick of Sarah with their stripped down brand of rock and roll. This track reminds me of a single the Runaways would have recorded.

Next, a little cabaret rant from former Dresden Dolls vocalist, Amanda Palmer. This author, singer and artist is a busy bee with her own solo career and as the other half of the vaudville act, Evelyn Evelyn. This lady will rock your sock-suspenders off!

And Finally, a little sassy Norwegian alt-rcok with Ida Maria! This girl is a global guitar playing monster. And this video makes me giggle. :)

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #7

Hello Peachy Pies! Welcome to Minx Mix Tape: a weekly all girl digital dance party celebrating women making wicked music for the masses. Let's get to the tape!

Let's kick off with a little Philly brat-punk by Slutever! Thanks to Sarah for turning me onto this totally addicting lo-fi temper tantrum. These gals are currently touring in a city near you. :)
Bold
Next up, some Americana Folk Rock by Lissie. Her live performances are just as clean and soulful as her recordings...and this one has a T-Rex. Yes--we've got a T-Rex!

For this weeks dose of Vitamin Weird I bring you Rasputina: a New York based cello-driven gothic chamber group. These girls pull creative influences from Victorian fashion, cabaret performances and folk roots. Their lead singer, Melora Creager is a Jill-of-All-Trades as the lyricist and creatrix of all of the bands amazing artwork.

And to wrap up this weeks tape is a powerpop punch from The Action Design--the latest project of Tsunami Bomb's former singer, Emily Whitehurst.

Thanks for joining the party! Got a song you want to hear--leave a link in the comments? Love the songs? Could live without them? Let's have some words. :)

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #7

Hello Sweet Potatoes! Welcome to another edition of Minx Mix Tape: an all girl digital dance party designed to bring you tasty tunes being made by Uber Talented ladies in the music business. This week we're covering polar ends of the sound spectrum--this could be exciting. Let's get to the Tape!

I received a request from a girlfriend for some death metal to make an appearance on the tape and I am MORE than happy to oblige. Let's kick things off with armor-clad valkyrie rock from Arch Enemy! Polish up your swords and hold on to your pig tails.

Next, we're going to be transported to a cosmic glitter constellation with this sweetly bizzare new wave tune from Marina & The Diamonds. Marina's airy soprano vocals are infectious and playful! Wherever this dance planet is--I wanna live there.

Now, for a British Time Warp Homage with this perfectly spastic punk rock anthem from the Legendary X-Ray Spex. You can see an amazing live performance of this track here. Lead singer, Poly Styrene passed away recently after a battle with breast cancer. Her spirit is still with us in her dense body of provocative and pioneering musical work.

And finally, to satiate your appetite for all things HEAVY METAL we'll end on a scorching track from hardcore veterans, Straight Line Stitch. Alexis' incredible vocals could destroy small villages. WARNING: Your face will be melted off!

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #6

Hello Lolipops! Welcome to another edition of Minx Mix Tape--an all girl digital dance party where we celebrate women who are making top notch musical contributions and making no apologies! Let's get to the tape:

To kick off we have a cooky track by Coco Rosie: a duo of highly creative sisters making beautiful creepy music with eloquent and haunting imagery. This is what I wish my dreams sounded like.

Next up is this snarly cut by Jessie J. While admittedly, I'm not a huge consumer of Top 40 Music, I appreciate Jessie's ability to effortlessly chameleon from one track to the next. The appeal is the tongue-in-cheek sentiment, poking fun of they way boys puff up and act like turkeys. :)

Now for one of my favorite bands, The Distillers. The now defunct band was fronted by Brody Dale, a kick ass Aussie who shreds on guitar and smashes up politics, social issues and personal narratives into machine gun songs. Sandpaper never sounded better!

And finally, we get a double dose of Brody! Her latest slick Alt Rock adventure, Spinnerette is a collaborative effort with members of Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age. This is a more refined effort than her previous projects, but still packs a punch!

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #5

Hello Muffins! Welcome to the fifth installment of Minx Mix Tape--an all girl digital dance party celebrating ladies kicking out killer jams! In anticipation of summer weather, awkward swimsuit sun burns and vodka lemonades, this week's tape is all fun. Let's get to the tunes!

First up, a little psychedelic pop rock from the Dum Dum Girls! The music is head-boppable, but the lyrics cut--a perfect "driving on a hot highway" record.

Now, a little electroclash from Le Tigre! Kathleen Hanna, former front woman of riot grrrl revolutionaries Bikini Kill, cuts it up wherever she goes: take no prisoners!

And finally, a totally guilty pleasure--Beyonce. I'll admit, the tune isn't particularly fantastic. However, the message is spot on and the video is f***'n MONEY. "My Persuasion can build a nation."

Thanks for coming to the party! Got a song you want to add to the tape? Leave a link in the comments! :)

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #4

Hello Birdies! Welcome to Minx Mix Tape: a weekly all girl digital dance party in celebration of babes kicking out SERIOUS jams! Let's get to the tunes!

We'll start things off hard and fast with The Soviettes!
This is straight up machine gune rock and roll--does what
it needs to do in under two minutes, thank you ma'am!

Then, we'll cool it down with some bleep-bloop-British
electropop by La Roux. This entire record is great: like
pouring neon greed bubble tea over the yamaha keyboard
we all had as kids. Click the pic to see the video!

Then the Grand Ole Party slips in with an arty blues
infusion! The band fell apart in 2009, but lead singer/drummer
Kristen Gundred has a new project kicking...but that's a post
for next week!

And finally, some ear candy from The Clicks! This is what
I imagine the Beatles would sound like after a few beers,
an old fashioned slumber party and a pair of balls! This track
is catchy--sticky like gum on your sneaks! You WILL be singing
this song in the shower...

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #3

Hello Pudding Pops! It's Minx Mix Tape time--our very own all girl digital dance party. This weeks tape features killer live performances. Let's Kick out the Jams!

First, we have a stunning soulful performance from Adele.
Her voice makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up
and do a little dance.

Next, we have Sleater-Kinney performing a track from
their last record, The Woods. Unfortunately the group
has since disbanded, but we're keeping our fingers crossed
for a reunion. :)

Now for a little Danish psychobilly from the Horror Pops.
Patricia Day is smokin' on the bright white upright! She's an
amazing mix of "Barbie" and "Bite Yer Face Off."

And Finally, we wrap up with supergroup The Dead Weather.
This band has several Top Notch official videos, but I chose
this particular cut because it showcases Alison Mosshart's raw sound.

MINX MIX TAPE: Volume #2

Hello Rosehips!* Welcome to Minx Mix Tape--an all-girl digital dance party that highlights great lady musicians making kick ass music for the masses. Lets get to the goodies!

We'll kick it off with The Creepshow playing Take My Hand
This band is all vampire, zombie, blood and guts good times!

Next, we've got the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with Heads Will Roll.
Some fans weren't pleased with their departure from artrock
into dance music--but artists gotta grow! Even with the shift in
sound there is still the same strong creative direction at the
gooey cherry center. :)

To lighten things up a bit we have, Bjork with Who Is It.
I love that she uses her WHOLE voice--utilizing it more
like an instrument to make sounds that support the song
content as opposed to simply singing words. Plus, her
performances and videos are at least 3 kinds of wacky.

Finally, we finish up with a fun song, I Was Right by
New Years Day
. This band is reminiscent of Taking
Back Sunday with heavy guitar and melody driven pop rock.

Thanks for coming to the party! Got a girl song you want to hear? Add it to the tape by leaving a link in the comments. :)
