Matt Cardle 'Letters' Album Review

It's taken me a long time to really warm to former painter and decorator Matt Cardle, who ascended to fame on last year's X-Factor under the careful watch of mentor Danni Minogue as he went on to win the show, even managing to perform with Rihanna herself (looking ridiculously tiny beside the Bajan Beauty). Fast forward a year, a Christmas number 1 and a top ten follow-up mediocre hit under his painting belt, Matt has actually delivered a decent debut album. Shocking right?

Standout tracks include 'Pull Me Under', soothing guitar ballad 'Amazing', the heart wrenching 'Beat of a Breaking Heart', Coldplay wannabe 'Stars and Lovers', rock guitar anthem and title track 'Letters' and Snow Patrolesque new single 'Starlight'. All of which were co-written by Cardle himself. Not bad tiny hat wearing man. (Still reminds me of the Childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for some reason).

Matt's follow-up single is unfortunately on here, the Gary Barlow penned 'Run For Your Life' and we'd advise you do upon listening to the sleep inducing effort, failing to impact the charts phenomenally with regards to his fellow X-Factor finalists Cher Lloyd and One Direction, but it did rank a well respected number 6 position.

One drawback would have to be the album's consistency. As a whole its a bit bland, feeling a bit boring by the album's close that is Cardle's 'When We Collide'. By track ten I'm feeling a little light headed and staring at my bottle of Jameson Whiskey for reassurance that everything will be OK in the end with 'Reflections', 'Walking On Water' and 'Slowly' failing to have any grand effect on me whatsoever.

Cardle nevertheless pulls out some amazing vocals throughout the 13 track LP(18 if you have the deluxe addition, a bottle of pills and willpower). Overall verdict? Matt Cardle has gotten rid of the hat that was rumored to be controlling his entire being and has basically transformed himself into a one man Snow Patrol. You will like this if you like Snow Patrol, Keane and Coldplay and are slightly manic depressive.

Matt Cardle's debut album 'Letters' went straight in at number 2 selling over 70,000 copies in its first week alone. His new single Starlight is out now. Matt is set to perform the track this weekend on the X-Factor final on Sunday's results show.
