Happy Clients!! From ITALY!!!

My painting finally arrived in Italy.... after being in the mail for over a month!!

My clients were so patient and agreeable-- and did not get discouraged. I was annoyed with the mail service-- as they inadvertently sent it to a different country!

Anyway, it FINALLY got delivered!

So exciting!

So here they are!!! Happy day! Thank you from the bottom of my heart Fausto!

BELOW THE SURFACE

Below The Surface Gouache on paper 30 x 42 cm

BELOW THE SURFACE Gouache on paper 30 x 42 cm

This work on paper is part of my Mother Nature series. The female figure is symbolic of Mother Nature. The trees which extend from her feet, and grow from her heart, reach out, below and beyond the surface. The pale green tree, which cascades across the 'scape', evokes the land's abundance, while the red, symbolic of soil, gifts the planet its nutrition. The white wavey lines and small blue strokes which whisper within the layers, speak of life systems, contours and hidden depths. The blue is suggestive of water and sky, the below and beyond. Regular readers will identify that the trees are my much loved transcultural/religious tree-of-life. This age old symbol speaks of life's systems and connects us with the past and propels us to the future. In the present it is up to us to hear its symbolic power.

BELOW THE SURFACE-LOADED TERM!

What a loaded term below the surface is! We talk about what's below the surface in a scandal, in financial implosions such as the GFC, beneath celebrity status, double entendres. We also talk and argue about what's below the surface of environmental issues. Below the surface can imply the 'real motive', the psychological impetus, the subconscious, intrigue, subtefuge, secrets. It also implies that what's below the surface is much larger, and possibly more significant, than what appears on the surface.

We are all so much more than what our exterior body appearance indicates. What's that old saying...'Beauty* is more than skin deep'. Or did I just make that up!? Funny though, when you think about what below the surface means it becomes appparent that it's not just about the below, but also the beyond. Indeed once the below is stirred and recognised its influence permeates across and beyond the surface. This can be a real physical influence on a material surface and into the atmosphere, or we can be propelled into other realms, such as the spiritual, imaginative and psychological.

CSG

This brings me to the coal seam gas debate [regular readers will know of my keen interest] which is heating up here in Australia with yesterday's release of the Senate Enquiry into CSG report. Here are just two media reports about the Senate Committeee's report  ABC Lateline Business and The Australian  Indeed, the Senate Enquiry dug beyond the surface, over many months of hearings and have recommended a number of actions based on well documented and research based fears, from various informed groups, about the affects of CSG mining on the Great Artesian Basin. Other issues involving potential impacts on prime agricultural land, health, social cohesion, farming practices, economic value were also presented to the Enquiry. The report is critical of, particularly the Queensland Government's, non precautionary principle stance. Indeed, I attended a forum on CSG at the University of Queensland in late 2009 where various representatives across the CSG debate spoke. The Government representatives indicated that their approach was 'well see as we go.'

Another investigation that goes below and indeed beyond the surface is Paul Cleary's book 'Too Much Luck: The Mining Boom and Australia’s Future'. Check out the publisher's site Black Inc Books I have just finished this very thought provoking book. It examines a range of issues for us now and into the future. Cleary's concern for future generations means he has gone not just below the surface, but beyond as well. I highly recommend your read  'Too Much Luck: The Mining Boom and Australia’s Future'.

So, to a more literal level...a CSG well is not just its surface appearance. What happens below ground, and what is brought up from below ground, may have far more reaching influences, many of them possibly unknown for many years eg: a breakdown in naturally ocurring barriers between aquifers could possibly cause cross contamination of water types [saline and non-saline], loss of pressure could cause leakage from higher aquifers to lower ones and this may result in soil subsidance; methane gas leakage can cause a plethora of problems with one issue of paramount importance ie: methane is a  dangerous contributor to global warming. There are many more possible outcomes which have been expressed by farmers, scientists and academics. The precautionary principle seems pretty sensible to me!

PERSPECTIVE

Ideas of below and beyond the surface link with my interest in perspective. Regular readers will know of my interest! I play with perspective in my paintings by creating ambigious 'scapes'. As I have written before, I deliberately try to stimulate the viewer to move back and forth from my paintings. When viewed up close small details are discernible, but from a distance they are not. This dance back and forth, is similar to the 'dance' I move to as I paint. I work up close and then move back to view a painting from a distance, or I place a painting-in-progress in a spot where upon re-entering my studio, I see it with fresh eyes/perspective. I do think this 'dance' is a pretty good metaphor for how we need to negotiate life as we live locally in an increasingly globalised world.

Usher and D-Guetta on Jimmy Kimmel Live

RnB sensation Usher took to Jimmy Kimmel's stage live last night to perform the David Guetta club banger 'Without You' a mere few hours after their rendition of the track on Ellen's American talk-show.

Usher's vocals were on point throughout the duration of the track as he performed slick, stunning choreography with four other male dancers at his side. D-Guetta stood behind him on a platform pretending to press buttons.

'Without You' is the third single to come from Guetta's fifth studio LP 'Nothing But The Beat' following the successful 'Where Them Girls At' featuring Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj and 'Little Bad Girl' featuring Taio Cruz and Ludacris. 'Without You' was released on October 21, and has thus far peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard 100.

Take a look at Usher doing his thing and David doing not much of anything on Jimmy Kimmel live, in the clip below.

The Deep Blue Sea Review

Rachel Weisz stars in the film adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s 1952 play The Deep Blue Sea as Lady Hester Collyer, a young woman who leaves her husband for a life with a handsome former RAF pilot embarking on a deluded and destructive relationship that in the end leaves the stunning beauty distraught and alone.

Set in a post-war London in the 1950s, this Terence Davies directed film, The Deep Blue Sea opens with Hester’s closing lines of her attempted suicide. Moving from a dimly lit window pane to a spectacular montage documenting how her passionate affair with war-time hero Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston) began. Only to get slapped back to reality by Hester’s compassionate landlady Mrs. Elton (Ann Mitchell) and by slapped I mean she gets another tenant to slap her. In the face. Rather hard.

Told from Hester’s POV, basically sitting around her shabby love nest in various states of depression and melancholy as her memories are interwoven into the overall story. The Deep Blue Sea accounts Hester’s estrangement from adoring husband William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale) and Hester’s emotional desperation as she clings to her self-involved lover Freddie; A man who loves her, but not enough to stay with her.

‘Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea’ is where Hester finds herself. A rock and a hard place if you will. A dead, boring, passionless marriage and an emotionally draining and damaging new relationship. Where a run in front of an ongoing train seems like a suitable option until the men in her life can take no more, leaving Hester slumping to the floor in hysterics before opening the curtains on a new day.

Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz has always been one of my favourites ever since she kicked Anaksunamun’s ass in The Mummy Returns, and her performance here is both moving and touching in all the right moments.

Perhaps the film’s greatest element is Davies’ use of background music with a dramatic score by Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto. Popular music and pub-sing-alongs also feature heavily throughout, providing a cultural and historical feel for the 1950s London. One in particular, Jo Stafford’s You Belong To Me providing an enchanting touch.

More importantly, The Deep Blue Sea certainly serves to capture the theatrical element of Rattigan’s original stage born tale. Although one drawback is that at times it can be a tad difficult to follow what is occurring in real time and what is simply a memory.

The Deep Blue Sea was funded by The UK Film Council and Film4. Rachel Weisz also stars in the new horror flick Dream House alongside Daniel Craig also out in cinemas now. The Deep Blue Sea is available to watch at the Queen’s Film Theatre from December 2 until December 15.

Nicola Roberts Premieres 'Yo-Yo' Video

Fiesty fashionista and all round ginger stunner Nicola Roberts has released her new music video for new Tikovoi produced single 'Yo-Yo', premiering earlier this morning via her Vevo channel.

The video kicks off with a random man spinning a few tricks on a yo-yo for the first 17 seconds before Nicola shows off her fashionista fame in a variety of frocks, showcasing her fantastic legs. Then its off to a houseparty filled with Topman/Topshop workers, one in particular being Nicola's love interest in the shearling denim jacket, where the former Girls Aloud singer ends up in the shower in an oversized blue t-shirt with a little bit of lace showing underneath. Standard houseparty antics.

Nicola also posted a link to the clip via her Facebook page asking fans 'What do you think of the new Yo-Yo video?' We friggin love it Nic! The solo star is acting alone right now, but Nic still misses her girls tweeting a pic of the band from over 9 years ago with a special mention to all members. (Yes, including Nadine).

'Yo-Yo' is the third single to be lifted from Nicola's debut album 'Cinderella's Eyes' following the Diplo produced 'Beat of My Drum' and 'Lucky Day'. The album peaked at number 13 digitally with work on a sophomore effort already underway. Nicola Roberts' new single 'Yo-Yo' is out January 8.

Take a look at Nicola Roberts' new video for 'Yo-Yo' below.

Destroyer Day Dream: Art Journal Entry

Hello cherry bombs! Went the the journal today with day dreams of wasting the city with rainbow laser vision and white lighting. I'm going to ride around on a big black raincloud fulla sour candy--smash up some parking meters and swing around on bridges. A new painting perhaps?

What are your fancies today?

White-breasted Nuthatch - Beneath the Beak

Laugh at yourself and at life.
Not in the spirit of derision or whining self-pity,
but as a remedy, a miracle drug, that will ease your pain,
cure your depression, and help you to put in perspective
that seemingly terrible defeat and worry with laughter at your predicaments,
thus freeing your mind to think clearly toward the solution that is certain to come.
Never take yourself too seriously.

Our Dining Area

Welcome to our dining area

We don't have a huge house, so we do not actually have a formal dining room.
Which I love, since a fancy dining room would be a waste of space,
because we don't have fancy dinner parties.

My daughter plays at the dining table (usually on it) while I prep dinner.
I love how open it is to the kitchen.

I hope you guys like it:

Here is a the before, or actually the "during" remodel

I bought my table, chairs and bench at IKEA
It expands, so it is perfect for lots of family and friends

The chandelier is from overstock, and I have to say.. I LOVE it. I am so glad I found this and didn't settle on something from home depot.

Where the kitchen and dining area meet

(I still need to find some stools. I am thinking metal stools... hmmm..)

The curtains are from IKEA

They come 96 inches long,
I just hemmed them and created loops on the top to get this neat look:

Well, that concludes our dining room tour :)

Thanks for visiting.

A Unique Gift Idea

Several years ago I was searching for a unique Christmas gift for my brother and two sisters. Using Photoshop Elements (see link in my sidebar) I made a "sketch" from an image of my parents' hands using the Photocopy filter. I printed them on a heavy bond paper and put them in black frames.I am happy to say they were a HIT! Do you make gifts for your friends/family? Please share them with me.

H&M Announce New Designer Collaboration

Off the bat of their immensely successful Versace for H&M collection created by outrageous Italian designer Donatella Versace, H&M have announced their follow up collaborator...drum roll please...the Italian fashion label Marni.

Founded in 1994 by Consuelo Castiglioni, who is still Marni's chief designer, Marni was named after Consuelo's sister and began with a new modern twist on fur clothing. Eventually developing other lines offering everything from dresses to eye-wear and expanding into menswear launching its very first Men's collection in 2002.

Castiglioni's fashion house is well known for its color blocking, prints and patterns much like the previous collaboration with Versace and much like the Versace for H&M, Marni will be going back to basics to create the perfect high-street Marni exclusives.

Castiglioni stated, "I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favourite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colours, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphic, adding sporty utilitarian elements,"

H&M's Creative Advisor Margareta van den Bosch stated the collection arrives at the perfect time with the press release adding:

"H&M is proud to announce a spring designer collaboration with the Italian brand Marni...its Founder and Creative Director Consuelo Castiglioni has created for H&M a spring collection for both women and men which capture the essence of Marni."

H&M's previous collaboration with Versace sold out within hours and caused their online shopping site to crash in mere minutes. H&M's new Marni collection will be available in 260 selected stores and online March 8 2012.

Foxgloves (29 NOV 2011)

This photo taken at the end of April is my favourite of this year so far. I remember how in awe I was with the scene; the cherry blossoms scattered over the "woodland" garden, the bluebells were in their prime, the foxglove spires on the point of emerging ...

PAPER CLAY experiments & how we got started

Oh my gosh it's been so long since I posted.  Getting products ready for our anual trip to the USA is all consuming ! Somehow, as usual we made the plane, lugging suitcases full to within a gram of the allowed weight :) After 40 hours of travel  door to door, we arrived in Denver more dead than alive, but in time for my daughter's and grand daughter's birthdays and Thanksgiving.

Here are some fired paper clay heart ornaments we will be test marketing this year. What's paper clay you ask. Check out my guest blog post here:http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4469792236996064066#editor/target=post;postID=8437742941792661520

These are hollow inside plus made of paper clay, so although they are ceramic they are quite light in weight. I'm thinking of making some really BIG beads when I get back to Namibia.

More ornaments .

These are ornament size, but I'm thinking of making them smaller for jewelry also. Ah so may ideas so little time !

Just before we left Namibia a friend helped me make a video about how Work Of Our Hands got started. I don't know who can spare 15 min. this time of year :) but here's the link just in case.
