Big Blue- Iris Watercolor

Big Blue iris watercolor has found a home. I am happy to say -- that 2 of the 3 monumental iris paintings I did last year have found placement.

It is a wonderful to have them move on to be my "ambassadors."

I love to see them appreciated!

This painting is currently getting framed- so I will post the final presentation later.

This beautiful watercolor is in museum framing-- recessed linen mat, archival backing, flat elegant moulding.

It is from an exhibition I did on small nudes several years ago.

I am offering it for sale now -- but have kept it close to me for a few years-- because I like it so much.

Delivery of Artwork

Today I delivered a large watercolor -- Marriage-- to a favorite client. She had also purchased two portraits of her kids last summer which were installed.

I was thrilled to see the portraits -- and captured them here.

The painting of Marriage will hang in her stairwell.

6 NORTH COFFEE

Here is the installation shot of STATE FAIR PIG at 6 NORTH COFFEE. I love this painting... and have been waiting to frame and show it for months! But, for some reason... I have been putting it off-- again and again ... until today.

I framed and installed it at my favorite coffee house... 6 NORTH. Can't wait to hear how6 people respond to it. It's an absolutely disarmingly bold pig... and brings a smile to me-- every time I see it.

The watercolor swimmer below is a reworked piece. I am digging working in the basement studio of my new home-- and the damp floor makes the washes dry to my liking-- slow and brilliant.

Now that the painting has been reworked--- I absolutely adore the turn of palette! SO dark and mysterious ... cut in with Opera Pink.
Right on~!

Maryville University WATERCOLOR!! !

Yesterday was the close of the two classes for watercolor and painting at MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY. The students were great!! lively and energized -- with good ideas and willing to learn.

I had a wonderful time working with ALL of them... and I wish them well on their journey of watercolor.

Recent Watercolor-- PigsRus

Here is the PIG! recent watercolor painting... C O M P L E T E L Y out of the box for me.... but...

i believe that is healthy and good for artists to do things out-of-the-box at times....

I went to the ILLINOIS STATE FAIR in Springfield, IL this summer.. and fell in love with this PIG!

so.... felt compelled to paint him. First.. the small maquette [posted on www.watercolor300.blogspot.com]

and then.. gradually this week.. the larger version of the pig began to emerge.

so far.. i LOVE it! it says everything i wanted to say.. and more.

it's big.. it's bawdy.. it's in-your-face fun... so totally unscripted and energizing to paint.

Reeds Watercolor

Here is a large scale watercolor of reeds -- that has taken some time to complete.
I am really happy with the palette -- and the complexity of the piece. There is a sultry character to this painting... that is sometimes missing in my other work.

Will frame it tomorrow for an exhibition.

Evan's 23 Portrait- watercolor

i have been doing a watercolor portrait a year of my son. this is his 23rd portrait [well, i've done a few more than 23...] ...

here he is as the happy college graduate.

Big Splash-- watercolor

Reworking an older watercolor... bringing to life an older watercolor that intrigued me once again. the splash is the central focus of the piece --- but the abstraction is also a big part of the piece.

this watercolor.. on unknown paper.. has been slightly a challenge for me. there were many times i felt like giving up.. and actually did.......
but... another day.. and another try and bringing it to conclusion.

at the end.. i used a scrub sponge.. and wiped out many areas to lighten the darks and add more shimmer and sparkle.

i can't say that it's finished.. but i can say.. that it's posted here.. and tomorrow.. perhaps.. will bring on another day's efforts.

Watercolor Portraiture

I spent the last two days.. doing 2 portraits of the same little girl. One for the child's parents.. and the other for the child's grandparents.

Each painting is similar.. and distinct!

Back to back portraits have their challenges and virtues. It was easy to make them related... and also... try to make them different.

The client picked them up as soon as I was finished -- very fine!

Tulips for Emily- Watercolor

Today is a day to remember those serving in the military who gave their all for our freedom.

Memorial Day -- a day of honor, gratitude, reflection.

My father was a career officer in the Air Force: Staff Judge Advocate-- rising to the rank of Full Colonel. He was asked to become General- but declined and chose retirement instead.

I grew up in the military -- so I have a profound respect and admiration for what the armed forces stand for.

My father was my hero: Colonel Samuel Filson Carter.

Tulips for Emily sold yesterday. It is a bitter sweet painting-- because of it's inception. The beautiful tulips are glorious... colorful and glowing in the sun.

I painted them as a tribute to my neighbor's daughter -- Emily -- who was tragically taken from us a year ago.

Thankfully -- the painting will end up with Emily's family as a tribute and honor for their daughter.

We will always remember Emily!

I am developing a very detailed image of an energized leap out of the pool. it is a metaphor for life. sometimes... with activity.. there is no rhyme or reason --- all is in flux.. and all we can do is capture the verb.
