Following weeks of online promotion, Jameson Whiskey NI's teams of Elf (myself included), Die Hard and Lampoon's Christmas Vacation fought it out for the top spot as the number one christmas film. With 45% of the vote, Elf secured its exclusive screening last night at the Queen's Film Theater Belfast. Festive hats, cardboard cut outs, Elf maidens and free Jameson cocktails...what more does one need before sitting down to watch perhaps THE best Christmas film of all time.
Elf follows the story of Buddy (Will Ferrell) a human orphan raised as an elf for the past 30 odd years only to find out he was adopted by Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) leaving Buddy to embark on a journey to find his father and bring a little bit of Christmas cheer back into the lives of the disbelieving people of New York.
Passing through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then walking straight through the Lincoln Tunnel, Buddy lands in New York City. Next stop The Empire State Building where Buddy's biological father and naughty lister Walter Hobbes (James Caan) resides. Dressed head to toe in his elf clobber, Buddy's sudden arrival doesn't go down too well with the Scrooge-like Walter and so Buddy ends up working in a department store where he stumbles upon the beautiful Jovie (Zooey Deschanel). And a fake Santa Clause. (You sit on a throne of lies!)
When Watler's resolve finally breaks down, he opens his home to Buddy introducing him to his wife Emily (Mary Steenburgen) and his other, much younger and often neglected, son Michael (Daniel Tay). Things get off to a rocky start, but Buddy finally begins to fit in sparking a romantic relationship with Jovie and connecting on a brotherly level with Michael. If only Walter would come on board. Perhaps a little push from Santa and his broken down sleigh is all that is needed for Walter and the rest of New York City to believe in Buddy and the spirit of Christmas. Afterall, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.
Elf is funny, charming, light-hearted and packed to the brim of all things Christmas. Will Ferrell is superbly cast, with the supporting characters equally shinning as a result. Overall Elf is a fun for all festive family film destined to become a Christmas classic. P.S If you don't like this film, you're a cotton-headed ninny-muggins.
Elf hit the big screen back in 2003 and was directed by Jon Favreu. Elf has grossed over 220 million worldwide to date, pulling in nearly 32 million in its opening weekend in the USA alone on November 9, 2003.
