X-Factor USA may be getting it from all ends by the critics (mostly because of Scherzinger) and yes it may not be bringing in astounding ratings figures, but it still doesn't stop me from watching what is possibly one of the most addictive shows to date as Simon, Paula, LA and Nicole took their 8 acts in their respective categories all the way to the judges' homes stage of the competition this week.
As well as glimpsing the glam mansions of the rich and famous, this week's episode also saw some of the world's greatest stars come out to shine alongside the X-Factor panel with the likes of Rihanna joining L.A. Reid in luxury at the Hamptons to give her 2 cents on who should make it through to the live finals. (The Hamptons with Rihanna and L.A. Reid..what I would give for that life.)
Collaborator and friend Enrique Iglesias helped Nicole out in her time of need at her pad over in sunny Malibu as the former Pussycat Doll cut her category down to half for the live shows. Credit where credit is due, for someone who has yet to make one single track big in the US as a solo artist...Nicole has a pretty sweet crib.
Paula roped in NERD singer Pharell Williams in Santa Barbara for the groups whilst over in France, Simon asked Mariah Carey for the girls but due to hurricane issues, the superstar failed to attend. Sunita must be pissed.
Standout acts have to be Simone from the girls (who talks and sings identical to Nicole who I'm sure is just thrilled about that). The 14 year old little rapper boy from the boys is a sure fire contender. Whilst, formed at bootcamp group, Lakoda Rayne (means unity and being blessed from above apparently, God I hate Americans sometimes) gave a rather awesome country version of Gaga's 'Born This Way' despite looking like New York pole dancers. As for Dexter, a 49yr old man doing Crazy In Love in platforms...amusing. Crying on Steven Jones' shoulder...priceless.
Two noticeable distinctions between the UK and USA judges' stage is that the acts don't find out who their mentor is until they actually reach said judge's home and they cut from one auditionee from one category to the next, rather than showing each judge and their entire category in the space of 20mins. Does it work? The theory is still the same. The acts still get cut down and its something unexpected from the original UK formula. So yeah, it doesn't upset the show's dynamic.
One thing that might is the music as the contestants audition in front of their judges. Is it pre-recorded vocals? We think so.
X-Factor USA: The Judges Houses Part One airs tomorrow evening here in the UK on ITV2. The episode was originally postponed across the pond with the follow up episode also being delayed to this coming Sunday.
