Alphas. The new superhero inspired science fiction show revolving around the exploits of five extraordinary people who possess superhuman abilities and call themselves 'Alphas' as they hunt down and put a stop to the criminal activities of other rogue and often bad ass Alphas.
The show gets off to a great start in succeeding where Heroes failed...bringing the damn cast together at the start. A six minute montage explains who the show's central characters are, what abilities they have and then how and why they have been brought together.
Now we are free to move on to explore the characters rather than wait 22 episodes to see if a man in a cap who cuts peoples' heads open is going to destroy New York or not. And there's not a cheerleader who needs saving in sight. Win, win.
The first episode is a feature length one as our team try to solve the murder of a man who was killed by a sniper inside a locked room with no windows or signs of forced entry. Tough nut to crack but luckily Rachel (Anita Ghanizada) has enhanced senses and can follow her amazing sight, sound and smell straight to the source. Any obstacles standing in her way being removed physically by Bill (Malik Yoba) and his super-strength, mentally by Nina (Laura Mennell) and her powerful method of persuasion and electronically by autistic Gary (Ryan Cartwright) who is basically Skynet in human form with the ability to view and interact with wireless communication signals out of thin air. Take that Google Chrome.
Once the killer is found, true to form all is not as it seems with Cameron (Warren Christie), the shooter, whose 'hyperkinesthesis' allows him to pretty much do anything perfectly. Bet that looks good on the old curriculum vitae. The team find Cameron was under the influence of a mind controller known as The Ghost whom the Alphas' front-man Dr. Lee (David Strathairn) has been after for quite some time.
Alphas has all the makings of a fantastic superhero show and should fill my void that Smallville has left in me with X-Men: The Last Stand writer Zak Penn on board it should be an interesting series with the character's charisma and chemistry being a real strong point of the show that will hopefully reach its full potential.
Alphas is a ScyFy original show which airs here in the UK over on Channel 5* on Tuesday evenings at 10pm and its already been commissioned for a 13 episode Second Season run.
